Sea Cadets & Marine Cadets from St Albans & Welwyn Garden City celebrated St George’s Day last Saturday 18th April in central London having been chosen from across the UK to attend the St George’s Day parade

Nearly 200 cadets from all of the armed Services across London participating in a wreath laying service on the Cenotaph in Whitehall before being inspected by the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps, Captain Fry RN.

Taking advantage of the glorious spring weather and in their best uniforms the Hertfordshire cadets made the most of their day visiting  Downing Street & Horseguards before being taken to The Royal Hospital, Chelsea - the home of the famous Chelsea pensioners for afternoon tea and a chance to discuss life with the 'old soldiers'.

Marching along Whitehall and into Horseguards proved to be even more remarkable as the Cadets arrived during the legendary 'Changing of the Guard'. With Household Cavalry horses and Footguards being photographed by thousands of tourists the Cadets were welcomed by the Guard Commander into the middle of the proceedings and took centre stage throughout the historic ceremonial events.

On conclusion the Cadets were invited into the stables behind the illustrious building and took every opportunity to try on the famous cavalry uniforms and even got to ride the impressive horses.

The afternoon was rounded off with a visit to the remarkable Royal Hospital, Chelsea where the cadets were met by pensioner and ex Royal Marine Dennis Shields before being shown around the estate and buildings, meeting some amazing characters and listening to their real and exhilarating 'war stories'.

Life at St Albans Sea Cadets is serious fun and we welcome boys and girls aged 10 to 18 who want to learn more about kayaking, shooting, windsurfing, sailing, drill, camping/survival, first aid & orienteering and much more.

We meet Tuesday & Friday evenings 7pm behind Westminster Swimming pool and we invite those interested to just turn up and say hello.

We are also keen to hear from any adults who want to help out either instructing or behind the scenes in admin or in the galley.
