St Albans Sea Cadets Celebrate Winning Ways

2nd October 2009

St Albans Sea Cadets (TS St Albans) have been celebrating a successful year with increased numbers and victory in competitions.

St Albans Sea Cadets is well established and has a track record of success over many years. This year has been no exception with success in kayaking, sailing and Expedition training.

Lt Cdr Graham Waylett, the officer in charge at the unit praised cadets and staff alike he said:

“During the year we have seen St Albans Cadets are just as good on dry land as they are on the water with four cadets winning the Herts District Expedition competition held in woodland outside Stevenage last month.'

Camping out over two nights the cadets lead by Leading Cadet Ilse Sharp demonstrated their skills in a variety of exercises including map-reading/orienteering, river crossing, mountaineering skills, speed-marching,  & first aid to beat cadet units from across Hertfordshire.

But it’s in water born activities we have really excelled. Following successful wins in regional heats in June this year, two cadets attended the national Sea cadet canoe competition at Victoria Docks, in September where Ordinary Cadet Samantha Smart battled atrocious, high winds & rain to take the Silver medal in her race with Marine Cadet Ben Lansdown piped to a close 4th in his race after drawing a particularly bad lane.

During the summer Cadet Jamie Earle and Leading Cadet Steven Smart won the Boson sailing race beating other cadets from across Hertfordshire.

A great deal of credit needs to go to the cadets and staff for the successes and we intend to do even better this year.

Pat Gosling the unit Chairman commented:

“Its been another busy year for the St Albans unit and we are seeking new blood both on the committee and as instructors to take the unit even further forward. Anybody wanting to know more about how they can get involved can contact the unit on 07958 320 638”

Life at St Albans Sea Cadets is serious fun and we welcome boys and girls aged 10 to 18 who want to learn more about kayaking, shooting, windsurfing, sailing, drill, camping/survival, first aid & orienteering and much more.

We meet Tuesday & Friday evenings 7pm behind Westminster Swimming pool and we invite those interested to just turn up and say hello.

We are also keen to hear from any adults who want to help out either instructing or behind the scenes in admin or in the galley.
